Another digital color study from a night hike. This was a really cold moonlit hike on Mount Beacon. We could only stand on top here for a few minutes before the wind and cold forced us down. One of my fellow hikers was brave enough to climb the tower to get a better view of NYC 60 miles away. The strong wind sung as it passed over the metal structure and I watched from below and followed the light of his headlamp as it slowly descended.
Digital Color Study from memory. Did a little night hiking with Hudson Valley Hikers. We went up the face of Anthony’s Nose on the east bank of the Hudson. The sky was illuminated by the lights from the Bear Mountain Bridge and Ice Rink.
My first oil painting completed(whoever knows when something is finished) in the last two years. Thanks to working hard in animation I don’t have time to use real paint. This is the Gates of the Hudson. Storm King mountain in light and Breakneck mountain in shadow.
On a recent night hike on Storm King Mountain heavy fog overwhelmed most of the snow covered peak. For a few brief moments the higher elevations cleared to reveal a fog blanketed valley lit by cars and street lights and a dark starry night above. These two studies were painted from memory as I had no camera capable of capturing the moment. The first is the view from Storm King looking northeast with Newburgh Bay blanketed in fog and the Breakneck/Beacon Range peaking out with the radio towers clearly visible. The second is looking southeast from the crags on Butterhill. The contours of the mountain carved by the light of passing cars.
These are digital paintings made in photoshop on my Samsung Slate. They were painted on the train while on my commute on the Hudson Line of Metro North. Had to work fast as the light and scenery changed(about 2-3 minutes per frame). The way this was completed was by painting with one open photoshop file. As each scene changed I would add another layer building on the previous layer and adjusting for the change. Eventually an evening scene would build into night through this gradual change. Most of these were painted in a South to North progression. For those of you that know the Hudson River will recognize the order of progression. NYC, Palisades, Tappan Zee, Croton, Peekskill Bay and Indian Point, Dunderberg, Highland Falls, West Point, and finally Storm King and Newburgh.
Foggy morning view Between Constitution Island and West Point. Crow’s Nest and Storm King in the distance. Painted from memory as soon as I got off the train.
First morning light Streaking across Storm King as viewed from Cold Spring. Late fall/Early winter. Painted from memory.
